Migrating an existing website to CHVEX

Ask for free migration help by ticket, what to prepare and how to share access safely.

Already have a website somewhere else? CHVEX offers free migration help through a ticket. This guide explains how to prepare so the move goes smoothly.

Before you begin#

  1. Order your hosting and wait until it is active. See How to order and get started.
  2. Do not cancel your old hosting yet. Keep it running until the move is finished and checked.
  3. Make a backup of your site and databases. See Backups and restoring.

Open a ticket#

From the client area, open a ticket and describe the migration. Include:

  • the domain name or names to move;
  • the name of your current host and the kind of hosting (for example cPanel or another panel);
  • what the site runs on, such as WordPress or custom code;
  • the approximate size of the site and the number of email accounts;
  • any deadline or time you would prefer for the move.

Share access safely#

Where possible, create a separate, temporary account on your old host just for the move, and delete it afterwards. Change any password you had to share once the migration is done.

What happens next#

We copy the site to your new CHVEX hosting and let you know when it is ready. Because your domain still points to the old host at that point, you can check the copy before it goes live.

When you are happy, update your domain as described in Point your domain to CHVEX hosting.

After the move#

  • Test the main pages, forms, logins and email.
  • Check that SSL is active, see Install and renew SSL.
  • Keep your old hosting for a short while as a fallback, then cancel it with your old provider.

Email needs extra care, because messages sent while DNS is updating can arrive at either place. Tell us in the ticket if you use email on the domain.
