Backups and restoring
What backups to expect, why you should keep your own copies, and how to make and restore them.
Backups protect you when something goes wrong: a faulty update, a hacked site, or a file deleted by mistake.
What CHVEX provides#
Your hosting runs on an upstream provider's infrastructure, and that provider takes daily backups on a best-effort basis. These are useful as a safety net, but they are not a guarantee. A backup may be missing or may not contain what you need.
Make your own backup#
In cPanel, open Backup (or Backup Wizard, depending on the layout). You can download:
- a full or partial account backup;
- your home directory (your website files);
- your databases, one by one;
- your email forwarders and filters.
Save the files on your own computer or in cloud storage you control. A good habit is to back up before every big change, such as a plugin update, a theme change or a redesign.
How often?#
It depends on how often your site changes. A site updated weekly could be backed up weekly. A shop or a blog with frequent posts is better backed up more often. If your website software has its own backup tool, you can use that as well.
Restoring#
- From your own backup: upload the files back with File Manager or FTP, and import the database with phpMyAdmin. You can restore single files, a folder or the whole site.
- From the server's backups: if you need a file or database restored from them, open a ticket right away. Tell us what you need restored, the domain, and roughly when it was last working. We will check whether a suitable backup exists, but we cannot promise that one does.
Before you restore#
Restoring replaces current data with older data. If you can, download a copy of the current state first, so you do not lose recent changes.
