Create email accounts and set up email clients
Create mailboxes in cPanel and connect them to Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird or your phone.
With cPanel hosting you can create email addresses on your own domain, such as [email protected]. This guide covers creating them and connecting an email program.
Create an email account#
- Log in to cPanel and open Email Accounts.
- Click Create.
- Choose your domain, type the name for the address, and set a strong password.
- Save the account.
Your mailbox is ready right away. You can read mail in the browser with Webmail, which you open from the Email Accounts page.
Settings for email clients#
Next to each mailbox in cPanel there is a Connect Devices option that shows the exact settings for that account. In general they look like this:
| Setting | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Username | The full email address, for example [email protected] |
| Password | The password you set for that mailbox |
| Incoming server (IMAP) | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Outgoing server (SMTP) | mail.yourdomain.com |
| Security | SSL/TLS, with the ports shown in cPanel |
Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain. If a setting in cPanel is different from the table, use cPanel's value.
IMAP or POP3?#
- IMAP keeps your mail on the server and in sync across your devices. Choose this for most people.
- POP3 downloads mail to one device. Use it only if you have a reason to.
Common problems#
- Cannot send: make sure SMTP authentication is on and uses your full email address and password.
- Wrong password errors: reset the mailbox password in cPanel and update your device.
- Mail goes to spam: ask the sender to check, and see Troubleshooting.
Keep an eye on your disk space, because mailboxes count towards it.
